Holly H. Shimizu: Gardening Green: Sustainable Landscapes
1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
This program will focus on how our gardens and landscapes fit in with efforts to preserve the environment. A new initiative being developed is to measure and recognize sustainability in landscape
design, construction, and maintenance. This will include considerations and recommendations for soils, plant selections, hydrology, materials used, design and human well-being.
Holly H. Shimizu is currently the Executive Director of the U. S. Botanic Garden in Washington D.C. She is well known not only to area horticulturists but nationally and internationally
through her work as one of the hosts of “The Victory Garden,” the popular PBS Garden Show. Holly has an extensive background in public gardens, commencing with the Royal Horticultural
Society's Wisley and The Hillier Arboretum in England, then gardens and nurseries in Holland, Germany and Belgium.
Returning to the States, she became curator of the National Herb Garden
at the National Arboretum and then was Public Programs Officer and then Assistant Executive Director of the USBG. Holly also served as Managing Director of the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden.
She has written and lectured extensively in her field, and she has led international botanical and horticultural trips to Europe, Japan, Costa Rica and Bermuda. Holly received her Associate
of Science degree in Horticulture and Landscape Design from Temple University, Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture from Pennsylvania State University and Master of Science degree in
Horticulture from University of Maryland.
Mike McGrath: Get Your Lawn & Garden Off Drugs!
2:30 – 3:30 p.m.
Homeowners who find themselves trapped on the “toxic treadmill” often don’t realize how easy it is to have a lovely landscape without using the chemical herbicides, pesticides
and other poisons that so endanger you, your family, pets, and the environment and water supplies we all share. Take turf, for instance: American homeowners currently use more toxic chemicals
on their lawns than industry and farmers combined. But the REAL secret to having lush, green, weed-free grass has nothing to do with chemicals—OR even organics!
Organic garden guru
Mike McGrath will reveal that secret and many more in a fast-paced session that will make you an instant expert in safe, natural gardening and landscape care—and help you dramatically
cut the time you spend dealing with garden problems. Whether your biggest foes are weeds, deer, bugs or disease, Mike will explain how to defeat them quickly, easily, and without toxins.
Former long-time Editor-in-Chief of ORGANIC GARDENING magazine, Mike McGrath is host of the nationally syndicated Public Radio show, You Bet Your Garden, heard locally Saturday mornings
at 11 on WHYY-FM. His latest books are “You Bet Your Tomatoes!” (Rodale; 2002), “Kitchen Garden A to Z” (Abrams; 2004) and “Mike McGrath’s Book of Compost” (Sterling;
2006). From 1993 through 1997, Mike appeared monthly as the regular gardening expert on the weekend edition of The Today Show, Saturday mornings on NBC.
He has also appeared on Nova, Good
Morning America, CBS This Morning, PBS Healthweek, CNN, FOX, and as a regular contributor on the weekly PBS TV series Your Organic Garden and the Discovery Channel’s Home Matters.
Holly Shimizu and Mike McGrath will appear in the All-purpose room of the Student Center. The cost for each seminar is $15 (per person) pre-sale and $20 (per person) at the door. The cost
to view the exhibit area is an additional $8 (per person).
Located in the Bucks-Mont Party Rental Tent in the James Work Gymnasium, the Bucks County Master Gardeners will present free one-half hour mini-seminars on a variety of gardening topics.
Free with paid admittance to the Garden Fair Exhibit Area.
